Considering you are reading this blog, you might be a member of SVU already or you are browsing our website because you are considering becoming an SVU-member. Still in doubt of joining? Hesitate no longer! In this blog we spoke with 5 SVU-ers and their reasons to play at the best student volleyball association of Amsterdam!
I’ve been playing at SVU Volleybal for some years now. When I started at SVU I did not have any volleyball experience, I was a volleyball virgin. In the years I have been playing, I really grew into the sports and now I made it into Gents 2. We train twice a week and play competition as well. At first I started because I wanted to combine sports with drinking some beers, but there is also the possibility to play competitive which makes it a good club for everybody; whether you are really good or experienced or just started.
I applied for SVU before I decided I was going to live at Uilenstede; I was still living with my parents and searching for ‘Studentenvolleybal Amsterdam’ because I wanted to combine sports with my student life. I found SVU and the idea of students and parties combined with sports seemed really fun to me. After 4 years of playing with SVU I am still enjoying myself every time. It is a lot of fun and there is also the possibility to play on a nice level.
One of my friends started playing at SVU and I decided to go with him. I love the events, the ‘ gezelligheid’ and that everybody is really close with each other. You can hang out with everybody, even the people from outside your own team. It is ideal if you want to exercise for a bit but also want to enjoy student life. After practice there is always the possibility to go for drinks, which is really nice!
After I moved to Uilenstede I started looking for a volleyball club nearby my house. One of my roommates played at SVU and took me to one of the beach tournament and I was sold immediately. Everybody was really nice and open and I felt part of the community in no time. The sport is what brought us together, but I made some of my best friends at the fields or in the bar after practice. The club also throws amazing tournaments and activities, which makes it much more fun than your regular volleyball club.
I was playing at a club in my hometown but all my teammates were relatively old. I was really missing the social aspect of volleyball. Through some of my old teammates I came in contact with SVU. Here I could play with people of my own age on my own level. Even after playing here for 5 years already, I still make new friends.
